Better Communication Means Healthier Lifestyle

Give your undivided attention to the speaker.
Concentrate on what is being said, not how you will respond.
Maintain eye-contact.
Acknowledge and encourage with gestures, like nodding your head.
Don't interrupt.
Other Factors

Your interpretation of a message is affected by many factors. The spoken word is only part
of the meaning; you must also pay attention to non-verbal cues. Body movements, facial
expressions, and the tone, volume and tempo of your voice can emphasize or enhance
your message. But if you're not conscious of these cues, you could be sending
contradictory messages.

Keep in mind, too, that where a conversation takes place is often as important as what is
said. Choose an appropriate setting - for example, be sure to discuss serious or personal
matters in private. Also, try to be an assertive communicator. That doesn't mean attacking
people, but it does mean expressing your feelings openly rather than in passive-aggressive
ways.
